First picture is the CCS/Receivers 1962/3 where I worked as a Cpl/Sgt
helping to maintain the radio relay link to Hittadu. Also included
are a couple of pictures of the Valletta which was damaged landing at
Hulele which was mentioned by Alf Commons and these show it being towed
to the far side of the island to be used for fire practice after the
engines had been removed. SAS flight had a wheel drop into the monsoon
drain whilst towing it with a tractor and had to bring a Tugmaster to
pull it out! I seem to remember that I was detailed to do the detachment
to Dunidu but Cliff Bugden "volunteered" to do it for me? I also
include a photo of practicing for the Dhoni race with WO Hollingsworth as
Stroke (there was a recent letter from his son) The CO was very
popular and when he was repatriated in 1963 he was towed from the
departure lounge down to the pan in a boat on wheels pulled by members
of the officers mess. A lot of the lads blockaded the road to delay
his departure of which a couple of photos have been included |
